WHY DIDN'T YOU LISTEN TO ME?!
I TOLD YOU SO.
No, you just wanted to get viewers...
Well, you got 'em...through a secretly recorded camera phone video.
I TOLD YA.
Here's the story, since the video keeps getting removed:American Idol hit the Charlotte Motor Speedway for auditions in North Carolina yesterday. Sometime last night, the HEAT was on. Mariah Carey said something Nicki didn't like and Nicki went BALLISTIC! She had an expletive-riddled yelling match with herself about not "putting up" with "her highness" [Mariah] and that the producers needed to figure out something. It was so bad that they SHUT DOWN AUDITIONS FOR THE REST OF THE DAY!!! Randy Jackson was trying to calm Nicki down and Keith Urban is seen just wondering what the bloody hell he had gotten himself into...mate. Word is, Mariah and Nicki were arguing over a contestant and Mariah said something about Nicki that included the word "inadequate." That seems to be what set Nicki off.
Here's the video. If it disappears, I won't repost it. 1) I despise TMZ and 2) I despise putting this type of behavior/negativity out in the world. Seriously.
So, boom, that's the story.
All night long people have been debating this situation and who to put the blame on. You know where I stand on some of it...
I TOLD YOU SO.
And you know I LOVE Mariah, but here are my feelings on the whole situation.Theme music (Sorry, I HAVE to, because I AM going to go IN):
Alright, let's go:
1) Nicki Minaj should have NEVER been OFFERED a position on the show. There was no way in the world you should have taken her seriously when she performed on the stage last season. Let's see if I can clarify my reasoning:
NICKI MINAJ IS NOT A SINGER. NICKI MINAJ CANNOT SING. NICKI MINAJ IS A PROFESSIONAL RAPPER.
It would be one thing if she was a Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, or a Missy Elliott. Those rappers can ACTUALLY sing and WITHOUT the help of 21st century technology (AKA Autotune).
How are you able to critique and counsel amatuers on how to make it as professional singers in this industry; if you aren't one?! IT. DOESN'T. WORK.
But, Nicki does have a couple of hits on the radio, multiple personalities, and bright wigs, so it evens out.
2) I feel like maybe Mariah feels she was duped.
Whether or not you like Mariah Carey, she has paid her dues and been a LEGIT, SUCCESSFUL artist for over 20 years. Sure, she's had some flops, but you can't knock that she's a legend. The only artist to have more #1's is ELVIS Pressley. She only needs ONE MORE HIT. She does what she does for fun now. If you like her or love her, she isn't out for your approval because she KNOWS she's a DIVA and she's worked for that title.
Too often we dismiss artists who have been around forever as flops, irrelevant, etc instead of honoring and respecting them as legends.
was watching an interview with Missy Elliott and Timbaland a couple of weeks ago and Missy disclosed how that was heartbreaking. When she was first coming out, there was respect for those artists. If you are in it for over 10 years, you ARE a LEGEND. You can't dismiss Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, PRINCE, MJ, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, Garth Brooks, etc just because they're not in your ear 24/7 at this very moment. The fact that I mention these people means they are legendary. Much like Missy herself, who continues to reinvent music.
All that to say, getting Mariah Carey to sign on to American Idol was a MONSTER deal. To take her resume, Randy's, and Keith's and add a Nicki Minaj; it shows that the show isn't being serious in finding a real singing star. It shows that it's about ratings. It shows that the show wants to see if it can cause trouble. It's a bit disrespectful to those that have worked HARD for what they have for a LONG TIME.
American Idol knew Mariah would not have signed on had she known beforehand that Nicki was going to be a judge. That's why they were pretending they didn't know who would be the judges until the last minute.
That's trickery.
3) I can understand Nicki feeling like Mariah disrespected her by saying she was inadequate to judge. My feelings would be hurt, too.
However, Nicki, there is a way to handle the situation. You chose to lose your shizz and curse the woman and everyone else out and become a stereotype on steroids. Do you realize how disgusting you looked? While you did that, what did Mariah do? She repeated the phrase, "whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" a bunch of times, but sat back and watched you make a mockery of yourself.
You embarrassed the hell out of me. Did you embarass yourself?
As an adult woman, you should have asked for a break and asked Mariah to come to you and talk about it.
Tell her, calmly, that you didn't appreciate the way she spoke to you and that the two of you need to resolve your issues. Sounds corny, but it works much better than you going HOODRAT everyone.
Thanks for being a stereotype.
Let's also point out that maybe she was right and the truth hurts. Take where she's coming from. Not only has she been in this industry for decades, but she's been singing and under a classical singer from birth. She is more equipped to judge a voice than anyone.
I'm not saying bow down, but have some respect for others...
and yourself, Miss Onika.
And you have to learn to take criticism. Every time someone says something about you, you flip off on twitter and tell them why they're irrelevant. Or you cancel a show or something. This is why you aren't equipped to be a judge or counsel; you have yet to learn how to deal with the NEGATIVE. It's super easy when everyone loves you and plays your hits, but what happens when everyone is turned off by you for SOMETHING? What happens when the PLENTY turn to the FEW? What then, Nicki? Just something to think about.
If you want to be respected, "act like you've been there before."
That bears repeating:
"ACT LIKE YOU'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE."
4...or 5 or 6. I don't know, lost count)FOR SHAME, American Idol. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Your show is FAILING and being outshined by a singing competition only in its 3rd season (The Voice), so there has to be some gimmick to get people there.
Aren't we over that yet?!
All that to say:
We could ALL be getting DUPED and it was staged. That's a REAL possibility and NO, I don't think they're above it.
I don't care who's fault it was, but GET. IT. TOGETHER.
The brighter days, when Mariah paid Nicki for a few bars on her song 2.5 years ago. And yes, I do enjoy this song, "Up Out My Face." :
